Life of Pi 2

  1. "comment" comes in the form of an idea!

and catch the idea conveyed by the following quote to understand my comment intuitively...

"Mathematicians do not study objects, but relations between objects. Thus, they are free to replace some objects by some other objects so long as the relations remain unchanged. Content to them is irrelevant: they are interested in form only"
~(from the quotes of Henri Poincare)

you can have good review of the book in the following site

Life of Pi review from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_of_Pi

Life of Pi is divided into three sections. In the first, the main character, Pi, an adult, reminisces about his childhood. Piscine Molitor Patel ("Pi") was named after a swimming pool in France. He changed his name to Pi when he began to attend secondary school, because he was tired of being mistakenly called "Pissing Patel." His father owned and ran a zoo in Pondicherry, providing Pi with a relatively luxurious life.[8]

Pi was born a Hindu, but as the fourteen-year-old is introduced to Christianity and Islam, he starts to follow all three religions, as he "just wants to love god."[9] He tries to understand God through the lens of each religion and comes to recognize the benefits of each. Eventually, his family decides to sell their animals and move to Canada due to political concerns.

In the second part of the novel, the boat to Canada carrying Pi's family and most of the animals in their zoo sinks. Pi ends up in a small lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, a hyena, a zebra, and an orangutan named Orange Juice. The other humans and animals on the boat drown. The hyena tears off the zebra's leg and spends the next several days eating the zebra bit by bit. The hungry hyena kills Orange Juice, despite her not being a natural prey of the hyena. Richard Parker eats the hyena because he was also hungry. Pi is left as the only other survivor. Pi finds food and water supplies on the boat, but as they grow scarce, Pi begins fishing for himself and Richard Parker, whom he keeps fed so Richard Parker will not seek to eat him. Pi also wants to keep Richard Parker alive because he wishes not to be left in solitude on the ocean. Pi ensures that the tiger considers Pi the alpha animal and therefore will refrain from attacking him. After an indeterminate time at sea, the pair encounter an unusual island, seemingly constructed of what Pi believes to be a dense mass of edible algae. The island supports a forest of trees and a large population of meerkats, the latter being sustained by freshwater ponds that fill daily with freshly expired saltwater fish. Following a period of recuperation, Pi leaves the island after discovering a set of human teeth wrapped in the leaves of one of the island's trees and observing the nocturnal occurrence of the algae floor and vegetation of the island becoming highly acidic and corrosive toward flesh. Pi manages to stay alive for 227 days, often half delusional with thirst and hunger. The lifeboat reaches the coast of Mexico and Richard Parker escapes into the nearby jungle, so that rescuers find only Pi.

The third part of the novel is a conversation between two officials from the Japanese maritime department. They seek to ascertain why the ship sank, so they interview Pi, but they do not believe his story. Pi then suggests they might rather hear a different story, and he proceeds to tell a similar story, but this time without animals. Instead, he describes being adrift on a lifeboat with his mother, a sailor with a broken leg, and the ship's cook, who killed the sailor and Pi's mother and cut them up to eat them. Parallels to Pi's first story lead the Japanese officials to believe that the orangutan represents his mother, the zebra represents the sailor, and the hyena represents the cook. Richard Parker, then, is Pi himself. Pi asks the officials which of the two stories they prefer. They say the story with the animals. Pi thanks them and says "and so it goes with God".

// I wonder why the red t-shirt guy sitting at the top of the screen is wasting his time in (Sitting lonely) writing a review for the book which was already available at the internet. Also there is no need for any translation of Tamil version to English.
